spyware program exploits a new vulnerability in Apple devices.
Researchers at the Citizen Lab information security group announced on Thursday that they have discovered spyware associated with the Israeli company NSO on Apple devices, exploiting a newly discovered vulnerability in these devices.
During the examination of Apple devices belonging to a member of the civil society group in Washington last week, Citizen Lab confirmed that the vulnerability was used to implant the NSO's Pegasus spyware on these devices.
Regarding the matter, John Scott Railton, the Senior Researcher at Citizen Lab, emphasized the importance of civil society's role as an early warning system for complex cyberattacks.
However, Citizen Lab did not provide further details about the individual or organization that fell victim to the breach.
The information security group noted that this vulnerability allowed infiltration into iPhone devices running the latest version of the iOS 16.6 operating system without any user intervention.
After the discovery, Apple released new updates for its devices to patch this vulnerability, and the company did not offer additional comments on this incident. In this context, Citizen Lab advised consumers to update their devices.
On the other hand, a spokesperson for NSO did not immediately comment on the research conducted by Citizen Lab.
It's worth mentioning that the U.S. government added the Israeli company to its blacklist in 2021 due to its violations, including the monitoring of government officials and journalists.
