Apple intends to delay the launch of its fifth-generation modem
Apple plans to delay the release of its 5G fifth-generation modem by at least two years. According to company analyst Ming Shi Ko, Apple will begin using its own modem chips in iPhones starting from 2025.
Previously, there were reports suggesting a delay in the launch of the fourth-generation iPhone SE until 2025 as well.
There are currently rumors circulating that the upcoming phone in the iPhone SE series might be the first iPhone to feature an Apple-produced modem for 5G networks.
Apple is expected to transition towards using its modem chips in iPhone SE models and iPhone 17 series devices starting in 2025.
The American company has been working on designing its own modem for over five years and acquired the smartphone modem chip division from Intel in 2019 in a billion-dollar deal. However, technical challenges have hindered Apple from developing a suitable modem for its products.
Currently, Apple relies on modem chips produced by Qualcomm for iPhones, and this partnership is expected to continue for iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and other products.
On another note, the two companies reached a settlement in 2017 to end a two-year legal dispute, allowing Apple to continue using Qualcomm's modem chips in iPhones for six years in exchange for licensing fees. This settlement resolved other patent and competition-related disputes as well.
