Traffic to ChatGPT has been declining for the third consecutive month
OpenAI reports a monthly decline in website visits for the third consecutive month during August of the past year. Visits decreased by 3.2% globally to 1.43 billion visits, following a nearly 10% decline in the previous two months. The average monthly visit duration also dropped from 8.7 minutes in March to 7 minutes in August.
On the positive side, the number of unique visitors increased to 180.5 million users worldwide during August. This number is expected to rise further in September with the start of the school year in many countries, as some schools have begun using ChatGPT.
The United States saw a slight increase in traffic to ChatGPT in August, coinciding with the start of the school year.
It appears that students seeking help with their school assignments contributed to this increase, as the percentage of younger users on the site decreased during the summer and is now returning.
The AI-powered chatbot was successfully launched in November of the previous year, reaching 100 million active monthly users in January, just two months after its release. This technology uses previous data to generate new content.
Before the release of Meta's Threads application, ChatGPT was one of the fastest-growing consumer applications and is now considered one of the top 30 websites in the world.
Competitors to ChatGPT were released earlier in the year, such as Google's Bard and Microsoft's Bing search engine, both using the same language model. Additionally, OpenAI released the ChatGPT app for iOS in May and for Android in July of the previous year.
Despite offering a free version of ChatGPT to users, OpenAI provides a paid version with exclusive features for $20 per month. Additionally, OpenAI also generates revenue by selling access to its AI models to developers and companies directly, and through its partnership "Microsoft"
